Interventional Pulmonology

Interventional Pulmonology is a modern specialty within pulmonary medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary and thoracic diseases, such as:

  • Lung diseases – Cancer, infections (pneumoniae, tuberculosis), peripheral nodules, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary fibrosis
  • Airway diseases – Benign and malignant stenosis, dynamic stenosis, fistulae, tracheostomy
  • Pleural diseases – Benign or malignant pleural effusion (liquid around the lungs), pleural catheters, pleurodesis
  • Cough, shortness of breath, hemoptysis (coughing up blood)

Interventional Pulmonary Techniques

Our Interventional Pulmonary Unit has the most technologically advanced equipment. Our interventional pulmonologists are experienced and fully certified. They work closely with thoracic surgeons, oncologists and pathologists in order to provide a multidisciplinary treatment plan and the maximum scientific result. The provided interventional techniques are:

Diagnostic techniques

  • Flexible video-bronchoscopy – , cytology and microbiology material sampling (washings and brushing), bronchoalveolar lavage sampling
  • “Hot techniques” (electrocautery, laser, argon plasma coagulation) for safe endobronchial biopsies and control of bleeding
  • Transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) with Rapid OnSite Evaluation (ROSE) of the biopsied material
  • Endobronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) for the diagnosis of mediastinal masses and lymph nodes and lung cancer staging
  • Non – electromagnetic navigation system (Synapse®), ultrasound navigation system (Radial EBUS) and fluoroscopic guidance for the diagnosis of peripheral lung lesions
  • Interventional Cryobiopsy technique for the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases and lung fibrosis
  • Pleural thoracentesis under the guidance of thoracic ultrasound
  • Medical thoracoscopy for pleural biopsy (uniportal laparoscopic technique)

Therapeutic techniques

  • Rigid bronchoscopy for the treatment of benign and malignant central airway obstruction
  • Endoscopic removal of tumors using “hot techniques” (electrocautery, laser, argon plasma coagulation) and “cold techniques” (cryotherapy)
  • Airway stent placement
  • Treatment of lung emphysema – Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR)
  • Removal of foreign body
  • Management of bronchial fistulae
  • Thoracoscopic pleurodesis for recurrent pleural effusion or pneumothorax
