Cardiothoracic Surgery

It is a fact that cardiac surgery is the pinnacle of surgical art and science. The department is staffed with exceptionally skilled and experienced cardiac surgeons (with past experience both in Greece and abroad) who, in addition to the sophisticated equipment and facilities provided by our Hospital (eg. the first hybrid theatre in Greece), manage all modern aspects of adult Cardiac Surgery, including:

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts (CABG or Bypass Surgery), using multiple arterial grafts, such as the internal mammary arteries and radial arteries with or without (beating heart) the use of heart-lung machine.
  • Replacement of heart valves (aortic, mitral, tricuspid and pulmonary) with artificial biological or mechanical valves, using less invasive surgical techniques (e.g. J sternotomy, right mini thoracotomy). The application of minimally invasive techniques is greatly facilitated by the use of sutureless types of biological aortic valves (e.g. Perceval).
  • Percutaneous implantation of aortic valves (TAVI procedure) in collaboration with interventional cardiologists (Heart Team). Alternatively, these valves are implanted through small incisions in the chest (trans-apical or transaortic approach).
  • Repair of native heart valves (as opposed to their replacement) is preferred whenever feasible because this provides significant advantages to the function of the heart and improves the quality of life of the patients.
  • Replacement of aneurysmal aortic root with preservation (David and Yacoub procedures) or replacement of the native aortic valve (Bental procedure).
  • Replacement of aneurysms of ascending aorta and aortic arch with synthetic grafts and management of their complications (e.g. acute aortic dissection). Also, management of aneurysms involving the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta (and their complications) in collaboration with vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists (Vascular Team) in the hybrid operating room with the aid of advanced imaging technology and minimally invasive access.
  • Ablation of atrial fibrillation during mitral valve surgery.
  • Surgical myectomy in obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) with or without concomitant mitral valve surgery.
  • Surgery for adult congenital heart disease.
  • Removal of myxomas and other cardiac tumors with minimally invasive right sub-mammary incision.
  • Mechanical Circulatory Support of failing heart with Levitronix or Impella devices.

“We were shown excellent care and respect by all staff – doctors – nurses and all ancillaries, for which we are very grateful”
